Seven Steps For A Successful College Search

What should students consider as they begin their college search?  Almost 50 % of students entering college this fall will transfer to another school.  One of the biggest reasons for this is the lack of time that went into their college search.  Going to college is one of the biggest investments a family will make.    Students should use the college search as an opportunity to get to know themselves better and discover what is important to them and where they would like to spend four important years of their lives.  This is what makes a college search successful.

Too often, well intentioned adults ask a junior or senior in high school,” Where are you going to college?”  Rarely, does anyone ask, “Why are you going to college?”  Perhaps, if students asked this question more often of themselves, they would have more focus as they begin their college search.

Here are some things to consider before beginning a successful college search:

1.  First, decide whether you would like to go to college in-state or out-of state, closer to home or are you ready to experience something new?  Don’t limit your college choices when you first begin your college search.  You can always narrow your schools down later  after you have had plenty of time to research all of them.

2.  Next, consider whether a small or larger school is better for your learning style.  Are small classes where discussion is involved appealing to you or would a professor lecturing a group of 350 students suit you better?  Do you like knowing your teachers personally or do you prefer being anonymous?  This is an important criteria in your college search.

3.  Do you like the outdoors and enjoy a more rural setting or would you enjoy being in a city and taking advantage of its many attractions?  Is the weather a factor in your college search and do you need a change of seasons to be content?

4.  Do you have learning disabilities and need to make sure that colleges are able to offer the support services that will help you be successful?  Or perhaps you are looking for a good honors program.  These are things that require time and research to get the right answers and make sure the program is a good fit for you.  A good college search will include schools that offer programs that will challenge you or help you succeed academically if you need additional support.

5.  What kinds of activities have you participated in at your high school or in your community and are these things you wish to pursue in college?  Do you want to be a student athlete or would you just as soon participate in intramural sports?  What kind of school would give you a chance to gain leadership skills which can be invaluable for your future?  College life is important to think about in your college search.

6.  Is there any particular course of study that interests you or are you undecided as to what you would like to do?  Most students have no idea what they want to pursue and many change their minds after they start college.   Do you feel the liberal arts would provide a good educational background or are you thinking more of a pre-professional course of study?  If you aren’t sure, find out how this fits into your college search,

7.  Will you need financial aid and scholarships?  Even if you do, do not rule out more expensive private schools in your college search because sometimes they actually cost less than public schools.  Again, don’t limit your college search until you have the answers and the reasons to decide that a particular school may not be right for you.

Utilize all of the resources available to you in your college search.  This should include your parents, teachers, high school counselor, the internet, and books that objectively describe many colleges.  College websites can also be helpful.  No one resource has all the answers.

Many families are turning to an educational consultant who has the expertise and time to provide individual attention and assist you in your college search. Educational consultants have visited many colleges and universities and know what makes each one unique.  They also understand the college admission process and why it is so important to help you find schools that are the right fit.  To find qualified educational consultants in your state, go to www.hecaonline.org.

Some students only look at schools with which they are familiar in their college search.  Others only consider schools that have a recognizable name.  Some choose schools impulsively and for the wrong reasons.  A successful college search should lead students to colleges where they will be academically successful, happy, and have opportunities to get involved in the activities they enjoy..

Being a Home Schooling Parent: An Insider’s Look

Home schooling is sweeping the United States and abroad. According to the National Center for Education Statistics for 2004, 2 million children are being home schooled in the United States alone! You are maybe asking yourself what is home schooling? Or more importantly what does it take to be a home school parent?
Home schooling is simply educating your child or children at home with you, the parent, as the educator. You do not receive federal funds and your child or children are not enrolled in a public or private school.
A home school parent by definition is a parent that has taken on the task of educating their child or children at home and I want to discuss the three most important things any parent should know and the ten things any parent should consider before taking on the task of home schooling their children.
I have been a home school parent for four years and with each year our home school has had its ups and downs and I have learned a lot about myself and my children.
The most important thing that I have learned is to trust God in this awesome task of educating and raising my children to be all that God wants them to be!
The second most important thing for a home school parent to learn is that God created our children to be a one of a kind creation, with distinct personalities and traits. I am so thankful that everyone is different with different interests. What a boring world this would be if everyone was the same! Your children are no different, learn to appreciate their uniqueness. What works for one does not always work for another, be flexible. The sooner you learn that the easier your home schooling experience will be.
The third most important thing I have learned is to teach my children to respect and appreciate their siblings and other people’s interests and talents. For example, my middle daughter loves to write and has many wonderful stories she loves to tell and write about, but my oldest daughter, who has a passion for math and science, does not even like to write much less think of a topic or a story to write about, so she will ask her 6 ½ year old sister for some ideas to get her started and likewise if my middle daughter has a problem with her math she will ask my oldest daughter for help, so they are learning to appreciate each other. Believe me, when you and your children learn this important principle your home school experience will go smoother.
I hope that these three important principles have not scared you from trying home schooling with your own children. It is truly a wonderful experience in being a parent. If you are considering home schooling here are some things for you to consider:
1. It takes time to teach, prepare lessons, field trips, park days, soccer league, etc.

2.Every home school parent needs to take time out. If you don’t you will be with your child 24/7 and that will lead to burnout.

3.You can home school rather inexpensively, but some curriculums or extra curricular activities can add up.

4.You, the parent, are responsible for seeing that your child socializes with friends at different events that your local home school support group set up or finding different socialization opportunities in your community.

5.The regular cleaning and laundry still have to be done and you might find yourself rearranging your cleaning schedule around school time.

6.Home schooling works better if both parents are in agreement.

7. Do your children respect you? Only you can answer that. If they don’t respect you they will not listen to you.

8. Home school for one year at a time. Don’t look to far ahead, you will get overwhelmed.

9.Are you intimidated about teaching?-Many curriculums offer teacher’s guides and DVD’s to assist you and you will find that other parents will help you if they have been through the subject before.

10.Make sure you get involved in a local home school support group. Some areas have more than one. It is encouraging to know that you are not alone and your support group will help and encourage you when you are experiencing a hard time.

Making the decision to home school can be a very difficult one and should not be taken lightly. It is a personal decision and no one can make it for you, but I hope that you will take into consideration some of the things that I have mentioned.

Home schooling takes courage and it can be a long journey but there is joy in the journey! Happy Home schooling!!!

The Role of Students Unions: Socialization and Support

Most people tend to be parts of something bigger in their life. They can be seen joining communities, form groups, make friends, etc. The tendency for socialization is an essential part of human life. A representation of such part during education can be seen through such organizations as students unions. In that regard, the present article will attempt to explain students unions as a part of the socialization process, necessary for all people.

Overview

The main part of students unions, resembling the socialization process, is being voluntary. Students are free in their decisions to join the union or not. Many students might finish their educational period without even having to face situations in which students unions would be involved. However, for most students, there is a need to feel the support of others, being a part of a larger group. Accordingly, the age at which students enroll in universities implies the lack of any experience, where for most students college is the first step toward adult life without family support. Thus, in those cases, with students joining such organizations, support will be provided by unions and their members, who are students just like them.

Advantages of Socialization

The main need for socialization can be seen through the need to be supported. Such need is especially apparent in formal and professional aspects. The vast array of non-profit organizations is an example in which socialization serves as a support for different populations with their diverse needs. In educational context the need for support is reflected through the fact that life in college resembles adult life in miniature, where the problems that students might face touch upon every aspect of adult life. Such aspects include employment, housing, health care, and of course, education.
