Joe Crowley Student Union

Joe Crowley Student Union (aka the JCSU or The Joe); not the CSU or the Crowley. The JCSU opened its doors to the public on November 5, 2007, with an official grand opening celebration on November 15-17, 2007. The JCSU is home to the offices of the ASUN and GSA, the ASUN Bookstore, the Center for Cultural Diversity, and the Student Union administration.
Naming Controversy
Controversy has developed as to the proper name and reference of the building in documents, maps, records, or other papers. The ASUN Senate, at its Seventy-Third Session, agreed to a recommendation to name the building the “Joe Crowley Student Union,” which was signed by ASUN President Jeff Champagne on November 8, 2005.
ASUN New Student Union Naming Recommendation.pdf. The Graduate Student Association concurred in that recommendation.
The Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education, on the recommendations of University President John Lilley and ASUN and GSA, named the building the Joe Crowley Student Union at its December 1-2, 2005 meeting.
Board of Regents Minutes, Item 7.
Therefore, it appears that a proper abbreviation of the building’s name is “JCSU” not “CSU”. Students and other university community members have also taken to colloquially referring to the building as “The Joe.”
Various The Nevada Sagebrush articles on the JCSU.
Some believe referring to the Joe Crowley Student Union as the JCSU could be confused with the former student union building, the Jot Travis Student Union (JTSU), now the Jot Travis Building. Others have suggested a religious connotation (e.g. Jesus Christ). With respect to referring to the building as the CSU, some believe it may be confused with the California State University.
Any reference to the building as anything other than the Joe Crowley Student Union, or its logical abbreviation, JCSU, in official documents, maps, or otherwise, would appear to be in violation of Board of Regents policy naming the building.
